Title: In the Pink
Artist: Carla Lobmier
Date Created: June 1, 2021
Words from the Artist: “‘In the Pink’ literally amplifies the question, ‘Does a woman ever truly have the right of way?’ and the declaration, ‘How blue can you make me.’ The words are juxtaposed on a figure lifted from a pedestrian traffic sign. The word ‘blue’ takes on two meanings referring to both the long-established ‘pink’ is for girls and ‘blue’ is for boys, as well as the informal use of the word ‘blue’ meaning dispirited. The pink pussy shape is repeated and scattered across the painting, representing women who have found voices for anger, protest and the right to assert disillusionment. The painting is small measuring 13"x15" and is acrylic on canvas with two collaged ‘I voted’ stickers included in the composition. Speaking one's truth out loud with words asserts a woman's Presence/Pleasure/Power.
